The fact that you can fit a computer, cameras, speakers, and so much more into a pair of sleek glasses just blows my mind.
Not only that, but it works too.
Meta, with its seemingly infinite budget for everything, managed to accomplish such a feat. And with a partnership with Ray-Ban, they’ve done it in style, and at the end, they’ve put a fat price tag on it.
Like usual.
Pros:
When a brand known for iconic eyewear merges with cutting-edge tech, you get something worth both looking at and looking through.
The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer blends style and tech, delivering impressive features hidden inside a frame that looks and feels much like a classic pair of shades. Below, we’ll dive into what works really well and what still needs attention.
Very Sleek / Unnoticing: These glasses look almost identical to traditional Ray-Bans, offering a natural, understated design that doesn’t grab everyone’s eyes at bulky “tech glasses.” You can wear them anywhere without feeling self-conscious (almost no one notices).
Prescription & Transition Lenses: Meta offers multiple lens options, from prescriptions to light-adaptive transitions, so users can wear them all day without switching pairs except for an additional $80 price tag.
Speaker & Mic Quality: The open-ear speakers get as good as built-in speakers in glasses can get. Which is a surprisingly crisp, balanced sound. The upgraded microphones are even more shocking.
Capture Button & Touchpad: A single button on the temple lets you instantly snap photos or videos, while the touchpad controls music, calls, and the UI.
Quality Cameras: The 12 MP lens captures sharp, vibrant 3K video with a noticeably improved field of view compared to the previous generation.
Improved Battery: A more efficient chip and better optimization mean noticeably longer battery life for both the glasses and the case. The glasses can now last 8 hours, a massive jump from the previous 4 hours in Gen 1. And the case sees similar stats as well.
Premium Case: The charging case now feels more solid, with magnets that securely snap the glasses in place and improved charging reliability. I just personally love the quality and design of this case.
Cons:
Camera Limitations: While impressive for their size, the 3K cameras still can’t rival dedicated cameras or even top-end smartphones, especially in low light.
Meta AI Limitations: Although Meta AI promises a smart, voice-powered experience, the current version feels limited and, like all LLMs (like ChatGPT), it can confidently provide wrong information.
Photo Delay: There’s a short but noticeable delay between pressing the capture button and the photo actually being taken, which can make spontaneous moments easy to miss.
Can Weigh Down: After wearing them the whole day, the extra tech adds just enough weight to feel noticeable on your nose bridge, especially compared to normal Ray-Bans.
Expensive: Starting around $379, the Meta Wayfarers sit in a high price bracket, which might deter casual users looking for simpler alternatives.
Integration with Phone: While the companion app offers decent functionality, transferring media and syncing features still feel clunky and occasionally unreliable.
Buy if:
If you have the budget, it’s an easy upsell when comparing it to the value of regular sunglasses; you just pay $100 more for a lot more value.
You’re very excited about this promising technology, you’re confident in it, and of course, you have the wallet to pay for it.
Don’t Buy If:
If you often lose your sunglasses, you’ll be bound to lose these, especially since they don’t have Find My. And with limited security, someone can easily steal and reuse them.
Really think about it, will you even use the features, the value it provides? Personally, I agree that the glasses look incredible and the things you can do with them are cool, but it doesn’t justify the price tag.
This isn’t a cheap product, no question. If you don’t have the budget, don’t even think about it. You can only wear such things in dreams.
A Few Final Words
Just look at them. The Ray-Ban Meta Wayfarer glasses are certainly a spectacle to behold. A marvel in technology. If you can pack a full-fledged camera, decent speakers, a computer, and good looks into glasses, it’s going to be Meta.
It might seem incredible, but there is still a long way to go with the technology; this is only the start. There are still flaws even with these glasses. And it isn’t cheap either. I’ll be sticking with regular glasses for a while. What about you? Will you be wearing these anytime soon?
